Automatic transmissions tend to develop a transmission leak more often, than manual models. There are more gaskets and more tight fitting moving parts that can slowly start leaking with regular wear.  Some of the most common places where transmission leaks needs to be repaired are:
Front pump seal leak. When transmission fluid is coming from between the engine and transmission. To repair this leak mechanics must remove it from the vehicle, average cost of repair $1100.
Transmission pan gasket leak. This problem can happen if the pan had been over tightened or actual pan gasket has a tear in it. Average repair cost for transmission pan gasket replacement $90.
Axle (output shaft) seal leak. In this case transmission fluid will leak out from where axle enters transmission differential part. The cause is usually normal wear. Average cost for axle seal replacement in San Diego transmission shop is about $90.

A late Ford truck with a 6R140W transmission came in to the shop with a transmission leak. When the truck was raised on the lift, it appeared that it was leaking out from the front where the transmission pump is, so transmission reseal was needed.
The front pump was resealed and the transmission case was resealed as well. The technician reused the pan gasket because Ford Motor Company says the gasket is reusable.
After reinstalled transmission was filled, it became apparent that fluid was still leaking from the front of the transmission, but not from the pump. It seems that so-called reusable gasket is actually the cause of the problem. The rubber sealing material has eroded away and is allowing transmission fluid to leak from the pan gasket. Because the fluid level is above this area when transmission is full, fluid was leaking from these bolt holes, creating the illusion that transmission was leaking from the front.
Since this incident occurred, we have never seen this happen again. Needless to say, I will never reuse one of these pan gaskets again, that caused many hours of unnecessary labor and trouble.
