One question I would get very often, but I could not answer correctly was when customer calls for transmission repair estimate in San Diego and ask me how long he can keep driving with current problems until it fails completely. How to make transmission parts last longer?

Honestly, some manufacturers are better than others, older 3 speed transmission would last sometimes for a few years after they started to show signs of failure. Today newer smaller cheaply built transmissions start to go and after a week its completely gone, burned up! Especially front wheel drive transmissions, when they start to slip, don't drive any farther than you want to walk home.

Warm up before you go.
Warm it up good for at least 15 minutes. A transmission that is cold, with a failing pump is loose when cold, as it warms up the metal parts expand, pressure sealing get better, this helps more than you think.
If the fluid is burnt now, change it, this will help.
Automatic Transmission needs to be "babied"
With a failing pump or clutches, automatic transmission will need to be driven very carefully if you want it to last a little longer. Don't use heavy throttle with it, and try and back off the throttle a bit when you know it is about to shift, so the shifts are a bit easier. You may also want to consider manually shifting gears using the gear selector. For example if you have transmission problem with gear shifting from 1st to 2nd , it might help starting off in second gear and then put it in Drive once you built up some speed. Then you have to shift back down to second gear as you approach a stop. That just avoids the 1-2 shift, but it might help. This only works if your car has a fairly easy time moving from a stop in second gear. If you have to floor it to get it moving, don't do this as it will stress the clutches too much and they will probably fail for that reason alone.

The best way to nurse along a failing clutch on standard transmission is to use a technique known as "Double Clutching." It goes like this: When shifting press the clutch and shift to neutral and release the clutch. Next use the gas pedal to increase the rpms 2000 rpm is usually a good start when shifting and re-engage the clutch and shift to the next higher gear. It takes a little practice to get fast, but it reduces wear and tear on both the transmission itself and the clutch.

Heat is what kills a clutch, avoid over stressing the clutch, avoid downshifts and accelerate as if you had an egg on the gas pedal. These would be true if you have a manual transmission, but if you have an automatic transmission, then the same goes for accelerating and you may buy some time by adding a bottle of Lucas trans fluid into the trans. You may need to drain out some fluid 1st before adding the bottle into the transmission.

When your internal transmission parts start to fail, start to shop around for a good transmission repair in San Diego, before it dies completely. When the expected happens you know where to tow it.
