This is one of the typical Transmission repair shop stories. When “all knowing” customer customer saves money on the transmission rebuilt, but ends up in a pickle.

The customer called the San Diego Transmission shop and asked if they would finish removing a partially removed transmission from his vehicle and reinstall a used transmission from the junk yard / wrecking yard transmission, which he was getting with 30 day warranty from the wrecking yard because his current tranny was defective. The service advisor and the customer agreed to a price over the phone. The customer towed the vehicle into the shop with the ATF fluid already drained, the driveline removed, and most of the external connections
already disconnected either by customer himself or another San Diego auto repair shop or mobile mechanic.

He explained to the service advisor that he had previously removed the original transmission and installed this Wrecking yard unit because it was making a low-pitched, whining noise. But the replacement transmission didn’t correct the problem. He said that he reused the original torque converter because the bolt pattern was different, and now suspected that to be the problem that is making transmission whining noise.
The wrecking yard agreed to warranty the unit and to provide him with a replacement transmission together with a torque converter. He fully intended to do it himself, but his work schedule had changed and now he wasn’t going’ to have time to finish it. Again, the service agreed to finish the removal and install the replacement unit. The service advisor explained to the customer that the price to R&R the wrecking yard unit included no warranty, and if the next unit didn’t work right, the customer would have to pay to have it removed and reinstalled again.

The service advisor suggested that it might be smarter to authorize the shop to rebuild or recondition transmission before installing it. The shop would be willing to rebuild either transmission unit: the one already in the vehicle or the one customer would get when he returns this one. The customer decided to have the shop rebuild the one in the vehicle because it worked well other than the noise, so it might cost less to fix and he would avoid the risk of additional expenses associated with getting another bad unit from the Auto Dismantler.
When the rebuilder did the teardown inspection of the unit, he found relatively light wear, primarily isolated to the clutches and front pump bushing. But he didn’t see anything that he could confirm to be the source or potential source of the noise. As a precaution, the shop recommended and customer approved a soft parts transmission overhaul plus the torque converter, and, as an extra precaution, a complete front pump assembly. They also offered an ATRA 12-month, 12,000-mile Golden Rule Warranty. After the unit was installed, it worked great and there was no noise in the transmission. The customer picked up the vehicle at the end of the day. The next morning he called stating that the car was still making the original noise, and he was bringing it back in.

The customer demonstrated the noise, which turned out to be the typical noise a worn power steering pump makes. The service advisor explained that they didn’t notice it, since it’s so common and there were most likely many more miles left in it. The customer wanted a partial refund because he still had the noise the shop felt they deserved to be paid because the customer authorized all the work they did. The shop offered to provide free labor to install a replacement power steering pump if the customer would pay for the pump. But the service advisor already said the noise was common for older pumps, and it most likely had many more miles to go before it completely breaks. The customer didn’t feel that this addressed the issue of having to pay for a transmission rebuild he didn’t need. The dispute ensued and the customer ultimately decided to take the matter to arbitration in small claims court.

The very origin of the problem was that vehicle owner diagnosed the noise that the car was making incorrectly and that mistake costed him a lot of time and money. It does not cost much or even some San Diego transmission repair shops do it for free to initially diagnose the problem. Please consult a professional before you buy transmission you don't need.
