Quite often I would get customers that come to our shop with complaints, that their transmission is not working properly, but the issue ends up being a problem with engine that mimics broken transmission like symptoms. Here are a few tips from San Diego transmission repair specialists to help you figure is your transmission is the problem.
These are signs of transmission problems.
  • The shift indicator doesn't point to the proper range. Improper shifter position trigger abnormal shifting in some vehicles (Honda, Isuzu, Cadillac and others)
  • A "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light is displayed inside instrument cluster. It could mean many problems, check with your mechanic for correct DTS (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)
  • Slipping. Engine revs up, but vehicle moves slowly or won't accelerate as it should
  • Vehicle moves forward or backward in neutral shifter position. Gears are binding.
  • Delayed engagement. It takes some time for the car to start moving when shifted in to drive or reverse. Vehicle won't move or shifts late during the first few minutes of operation.
  • Hard shifting, clunking into gear. Noise or harsh feeling when transmission is placed in gear, or while changing gears.
  • Doesn't go in to drive or reverse. You could not make car move at all when place the shift lever in drive or reverse and nothing happens. Even racing the engine won't move the vehicle.
  • Shifting at improper speed levels too early or holding gears too long. Any noticeable early or late shifting.
  • Strange noises of any kind. Whining, whistling, grinding.
  • Car would not down shift when you floor the pedal to the metal. Passing gear won't engage. You get no surge of power when you press the pedal to the floor.
  • Vehicle tries to move in park (P).
  • The engine stalls on take off or as soon you shift to Drive or Reverse.
  • Shifter handle is hard to move in or out of any position. Could be problem with shifter cable.
  • The shift indicator must be slightly off P or N to start car. Car starts in Drive.
