San Diego Mercedes Benz 722.6 Transmission Leak / Low Transmission Fluid

Probably the worst that could happen after you acquire a used car from private party is that it would start having engine or transmission problems very soon after purchase used car. It could be that a person who has sold a vehicle was not completely honest or that it’s just bad luck and used cars has used parts that brake.

Very similar story happened to one of our customers, who bought a used 2004 Mercedes Benz C230 model. He arrived to our repair garage about a week after purchasing a car and was complaining about car not shifting properly in the mornings.
When engine warms up and reaches normal working temperature, the car drives perfect.

After a test drive our transmission specialist noticed a check engine light was staying lit on and some trouble codes were stored in ECM. The trouble codes stored in ETC (Electronic Transmission Control) were Code: 147 The Gear is implausible or transmission slips sporadically. Also a general code P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction.

First thing first we check transmission from the outside and inspect for damaged wiring and transmission fluid leaks.

This Mercedes Benz C230 comes equipped with 722.6 trans-axle unit that uses Shell 3403-M 115 transmission fluid or suitable synthetic alternative. Beginning Year 2000 many MB models does not come with dip stick to check the level of transmission fluid. To find out if you have sufficient level of fluid you must tow vehicle to either dealership or a specialized transmission repair shop that provides Mercedes repair San Diego.

After checking the fluid level and adding about 4 quarts of synthetic transmission fluid, the car was driving like new and no longer showing any signs of slipping gears or any trouble codes.

Low fluid was caused by leaking transmission pan gasket.

Simple thing like low fluid can make ETC (transmission computer) go crazy and activate fail safe mode to protect automatic transmission from further damage.
